LiBatt Recycling Secures £50K in Clean Futures Accelerator: Paving the Way for Sustainable Battery Recycling
We are delighted to announce that LiBatt Recycling, a Recyclus Group company, has secured £50K funding through the Clean Futures Accelerator Program, spearheaded by Catapult Connected Places. In alignment with this initiative, we will be matching the grant with an additional £50K.
This significant funding will enable us to develop and validate a groundbreaking recycling process for lithium thionyl chloride (LTC) batteries. These batteries are commonly used in devices that demand long life spans, such as fire alarms, smart meters, and a wide range of industrial applications.
Currently, there are no established recycling methods for LTC batteries in Europe. While some are exported, many remain stored in yards across the UK, posing environmental risks due to the toxic chemicals they contain.
By the project's completion, LiBatt Recycling aims to establish a safe and effective process to recycle LTC batteries, ensuring that the recovered lithium is reintroduced into the supply chain.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for both LiBatt Recycling and the UK. LTC batteries contain up to 5% lithium by mass, and recycling this material strengthens our national resource security. Recycling just one tonne of LTC batteries can produce enough lithium to power seven large electric vehicles.
